4th of July events and comments
What a great holiday is the 4th! I mean, family, friends, three-legged races, fireworks, Watermelon seed spitting contests…..and then there’s the food! Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chips, Cake, Cookies, Ice Cream, Baked Beans, Deviled Eggs…..oh man! I’m getting hungry again!
So that describes a lot of my day. I did errands and things during the day, and then at 4:00 went to the home of a family in our church. It was this huge fellowship of lots of people. Probably 70% of all the people that I know in this area were at this fellowship. (Rough guess.) It was pretty cool. We had lots of fun, and I was the official announcer and “Ready, Set, Go!” guy for the three-legged race. And I also won the Watermelon Seed Spitting contest! I was shocked! I spit my second seed 31′ 2″, beating the second place contestant by almost a foot! I think this helped me to establish myself as a southerner and put to rest some of the “Yankee” jokes. (It seemed that way.) If nothing else it proved that I am the biggest wind bag around!
*Que Rant* I’d like to say something else. Most of you know I’m not a fuddy-duddy, and I don’t have a problem with shorts. But it bothers me that many girls in today’s world wear shorts that I think are very short, and other forms of immodest dress. I am frequently, in my day to day life, having to keep my eyes focused on their faces and my mind from going where it shouldn’t. There are times when even Christian girls dress in a way that is difficult for me. It is sometimes hard to avoid the eye trap they just wave out in front of me.
You know, normally I don’t say anything about that kind of stuff. I mean, modesty is not as important as the heart of a person. But I have to say something, and maybe encourage some of you women out there to be on guard about what you wear. For some reason you don’t seem to notice how seductive you look.
Please girls, be careful. You have no idea what that does to a guy. It is very distracting and I greatly dislike it. It’s hard enough fighting the battle with lust on a day to day basis. I sometimes really get tired of that fight. But I certainly don’t like having extra snares thrown before my face. Girls, ladies, precious women of Christ, please be considerate of us and be extra careful about how you dress. I understand this is a hard line to play with, and you don’t want to be immodest but you also don’t want to wear blankets. I understand. I have sisters. But just half a thought would go a long way.
OK, that’s enough of that. I need to get going and meet someone for lunch. Y’all have a great 5th of July!
Just wanted to say I appreciate your comments re: modesty . . . and even more appreciate the fact that there are still men who are bothered by and dislike the effect immodesty has on their minds, rather than enjoying and capitalizing on it. Blessings from a fellow Virginian —
Thank you for this post Jarod. I am glad to hear from a guy that modesty does matter, and that the effort we put in really is worth it. i miss having you around here at H.Q. “Bro.” ~Beth
Great rewrite, Jarod….concerns well expressed. Thanks for caring enough to be honest and speak the truth. You’re not the only man out there that struggles….
