Signs
- Supernatural
- Sun moves backward for Hezekiah (2Kings 20)
- Sun stands still for 24 hours (Joshua 10)
- Darkening as part of Egyptian plagues (Ex. 10)
- Three hour solar eclipse during crucifixion (Matt. 27:45)
- Predicted by Jesus (Lk. 21:25-26)
- “Sign posts”
- Skilled seamen can navigate by the stars.
- S.M.S. display the amazing power and awesomeness of God. They “declare the glory of God” as a sign post that says “God was here”, “Creator Crossing”,
- More than 100 Billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy! If we counted one per second, it would take us over 2,000 years to count each star.
- More than 100 Billion GALAXIES in the known universe! (Grain of sand covers portion of sky, in that portion contains 10,000 galaxies.)
- More stars in the universe than grains of sand upon the Earth!
- Sun burns at 10,000 degrees, with the power of billions of nuclear bombs every second! (100 times the diameter of the earth.)
- Without the moon a chain reaction comes that ends all life on the planet.
- These heavenly bodies are designed to declare the Creator through signs.
- Lesson: God wants us to know him.
- Sun moves backward for Hezekiah (2Kings 20)
Seasons
- Sun, Moon, Stars allow for observation of the passing of time. (Days, Years, Seasons)
- Provides order to our society, and the ability to measure what has happened, and anticipate what will come.
- If no measurement (yard, foot, cup, gallon, etc.) no ability to be precise.
- Remembering what has happened in the past is important to the Lord. (Deut. 8:2)
- Provides context, and strengthens our faith.
- Becomes much harder without a measurement of time.
- Lesson: Remember what God has done for us, and have faith he controls the future.
- Provides order to our society, and the ability to measure what has happened, and anticipate what will come.
Separation
- Sun and Moon very distinct from one another. One rules the day, one rules the night.
- Designed to divide day from night. (Gen. 1:14)
- Assigned as light sources for the Earth.
- A powerful illustration: Light is meant to be separate from darkness. We are meant to be separate from sin.
- 1 Jn 1:5-7
- John 17:15-19
- 1 Jn 2:9-11
- From the beginning God designed light to be separate, set apart, from darkness. The two cannot and should not mix.
Lesson: Don’t try to compromise with evil in your heart.
