Gen 1:24-26

By Jarod Hinton –

Intro:

  • Define Terms – Living Creatures
    • Living = Kahee – Alive, life (also translated “beast” later in verse)
    • Creature = Neh-fesh – breathing creature. From root meaning “to breath.” Sometimes translated “soul” in the sense of being an individual. (“Man became a living soul.” Gen 2)

  • Division – Divided into three categories:
    • “Cattle” = Any four-footed animal that lives in herds. (Cows, Horses, Elephants, Antilope, Deer, Pigs, Behemoth, etc.)
      • What is Behemoth? – A great land beast, probably a sauropod dinosaur. (Job 40:15-19)
    • “Creeping Thing” = Reptiles, or anything that creeps or “glides” upon the ground. (Worms, Insects, Snakes, Crocodiles, etc.)
    • “Beast of the Earth” = Everything else. Things like Squirrels, Rabbits, Bears, Tigers, Apes, Monkeys, Groundhogs, T-Rex, etc.
    • Lesson? – God appreciates and values order.

  • Distinction – “After their kind”
    • “Kinds” were to be distinct from one another. (Kind is similar to modern “species”, but not exactly the same thing. Dog kind, Cow kind, Snake kind, have different species.)
    • We will often see variation within a particular kind. (Dogs good example.)
      • This is not proof for evolution. No switching of kinds.
        • Evolutionists will point to adaptations within kinds as proof.
        • Dogs don’t change to cats. Cows do not switch to horses.

  • Designed – to bring the Creator glory
    • Some people glorify animals to the point of making them more important than humans.
      • This is an over glorification of animals and is unbiblical.
      • We are stewards, not servants, of nature.
    • As we study creatures of the world, the Creator is revealed to us.
      • See below.
    • Part of what makes animals fun is the fact that they declare the wisdom and understanding of our Creator.
      • Sometimes when observing a design, we can see its flaws and problems. (Building, Computer Software, Painting, etc.)
      • When we observe the designs in nature, especially living creatures, we find no flaws and we continue to be awed by the wisdom and skill of the Designer.

  • Dominion – The Final Creature (vs. 26)
    • Mankind is created in the Image of God as the ruler of Creation.
    • First mention of the Trinity. (Plural, “let us”)
      • The word “Trinity” does not show up in Scripture anywhere, but the concept of a triune God is everywhere. (John 15, John 6-8, Acts 5)
      • Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all co-equal and co-eternal parts of God himself. He is One Being but three Persons.
    • How are we in the image of God?
      • We are also three distinct parts in one person. (Not two parts)
        • Body, Soul, and Spirit (1 Thess. 5:23)
      • We are given the ability to communicate with God himself!
        • We connect with the Spiritual realm, whereas animal kingdom cannot.
      • It is because we are in God’s image that we are the greatest of creation. We are greater than the animals by design.
    • First thing said about mankind is that we are in the image of God. Second thing mentioned is that we are given dominion over the created world. (“…all the earth.”)
      • Dominion = “raw-daw” – to tread down, subjugate, dominate, rule
      • We are given ruler-ship, and stewardship, of his creation. What an amazing trust!
      • Imagine how wonderful creation is, and how majestic and incredible…and then God trusts mankind to rule and have dominion over the world!
      • We should be careful to rule well. To be good stewards of the world God has given us.
        • Am I endorsing environmentalism? Certainly not! (Climate change is a lie!)
        • We do not glorify the environment over mankind, which is extreme.
    • Characteristics of a Good Ruler:
      • Wise – Patient – Understanding – Knowledgeable – Strong – Courageous – Discerning – Consistent
    • What value God places upon mankind! To trust us with this amazing world means that he created us with the intelligence and ability to do it well. That we are his trusted stewards.
    • Makes me feel better about myself. Gives me a sense of purpose in the world.
