Intro: Genesis is, of course, a book of firsts. We have seen, and will continue to see, many first things. There is significance to the order in which God chooses to do something or reveal something to us. What he does or says first is significant, and what he says last is also significant. Let us look at the first day of Creation, and God’s first creation – light itself.
- Physical Truth
- Happened in a 24 hour period
- “Morning and Evening…” – Simple reading of the text.
- Exodus 20:11 – Refutes the debate over meaning of Hebrew word “yom” (day).
- A very important aspect of understanding the rest of Genesis.
- If not literal 24 hour period, we leave room for millions of years.
- Millions of years in the “creation” of the world, as some Bible teachers try to insert, actually undermines key doctrines of Scripture. (i.e. Sin and Death; Rom. 5:12, 14)
- Characteristics of Physical Light
- This passage refers not just to visible light, but the entire electromagnetic spectrum. X-rays, gamma-rays, colors, infrared light, etc.
- One of the fundamental constants in nature. (Speed always the same.)
- Particle-Wave Duality (has both wave and particle properties.)
- Can carry messages. (TV, Radio)
- Can vary intensity (Lasers – soft reading light)
- Sunlight necessary photo-synthesis to occur in plants. Key process for energy to be transferred to all living things.
- Light created three days prior to the Sun
- Teaches us that God himself is the True source of light.
- Happened in a 24 hour period
- Spiritual Truth
- God’s Word Creates
- Jesus Christ is the Word – John 1:1-3
- God said it…and it happened.
- The Word of God is powerful. On an incredible scale even Christians do not grasp. (Heb 1:3, Heb 4:12,
- God spoke the name “YHVH” when he said “let there be…” (Ex. 3:13-14, John 8:58)
- Jesus is the “I AM”, Jesus is the Word of God, and Jesus is the Light of the World. In the very first two words God speaks, we find Christ!
- The Word of God creates good things even today.
- Christians, Peace, Joy, Strength, Victory
- God’s Word (Bible) brings about all these things.
- Division
- Light and Darkness are divided and named. (Naming shows authority.)
- The two do not mix. They are separated, from the very beginning.
- Observe that darkness is not called “good.” Indicates that light is greater and better than darkness.
- 1 Thess. 5:5, Eph. 5:11 – We are to be separate from Darkness.
- Pictures holiness to us. A consecration.
- Word “divided” = word used for consecration in Deut. 10:8, 1Kin. 8:53
- As light is meant and designed to never mix with darkness, neither are we, the children of light, intended to compromise with evil or be joined with that which is darkness.
- Does not mean we do not impact the darkness. Jesus said to be in the world. Have to have relationships with sinners in order to reach them. (But we don’t have to curse to reach the cursers, etc.)
- John 17:15-17
- God still creates light all the time!
- John 1:9-10 – Christ still “lights” men today. Speaks of conscience.
- 2 Cor. 4:6 – Redemption.
- Sends Believers to dark places.
- God’s Word Creates
